Stephen is a young intellectual about town and is the focus of the first three episodes of the novel. Stephen is Joyce’s literary version of himself and reflects the author both in appearance and personality. Stephen is tortured of late by the recent death of his mother, his refusal to pray at her bedside (as pointed out by Buck Mulligan), and the general malaise of a quarter-life intellectual yet to find a concrete path in life.
